Digital mammography system is one of few available to patients in Lane County

Eugene, Ore. – Women’s Care is introducing an improved method of breast cancer detection with the addition of a new digital breast-imaging machine at its Country Club Road location in Eugene. The new device, a Hologic Selenia S, will offer patients access to one of the few digital mammography systems available in Lane County, starting on Monday, Feb. 16.

Patients will realize numerous benefits with this new full-field digital mammography system, including lower radiation doses, reduced breast compression pressure and improved cancer detection rates. In addition, the equipment can better accommodate all body types, causing minimal discomfort. The system’s on-site location makes it easy for Women’s Care patients to save time by undergoing breast screenings during their annual check-up appointments.

“We are very pleased to offer the most up-to-date breast health screening for our patients,” says Dr. Doug Austin of Women’s Care. “This new technology provides superior images for early detection, so women with issues can be treated as soon as possible.”

The new machine provides patients significant advances in breast cancer diagnosis. The device produces clearer images from a more dynamic range than older analog mammography equipment and the images are easier to store and display.

It’s estimated that more than 182,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 alone, according to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Centers for Disease Control recommends mammograms as the best method of detecting breast cancer early when it’s easiest to treat. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is confined to the breast, the five-year survival rate is close to 100 percent.
