Fertility Center Patients Celebrate

Mother’s Day is traditionally a holiday when moms are lavished with gifts, flowers or even breakfast in bed. But for those who attended Women’s Care Fertility Center’s annual Mother’s Day celebration, the holiday has extra-special significance. Nearly 50 families were on hand to share the thrill of simply being a mother - or a father - at all.

Proud parents introduced their offspring to Fertility Center staff, and kids enjoyed pony rides, face painting, food and games. According to Fertility Center physician Paul Kaplan, M.D., "We’re so thankful that these people are willing to include us in their families‚ lives. Such a joyous Mother’s Day celebration makes our work so worthwhile."

Among those reveling in parenthood were:

Alba and Roger of Coos Bay, with their 13-month-old son, Austin. After two years of trying to conceive a child, the couple sought help from the Fertility Center. Extensive testing showed no apparent physical cause for their infertility. After only three months, two attempts at artificial insemination resulted in a successful pregnancy.

Alba recalls that Dr. Austin was very positive, and thoroughly explained the procedures and costs involved. "It seemed like he really cared, and he was really excited for us," Alba recalls. "We feel close to him for that." She adds that Dr. Austin was a big part of the reason they chose their son’s name.

Laurie and Robert from Veneta, with 7-year-old Michael, and eight-month-old twin sons Tucker and Austin. About a year after Michael’s birth, Robert and Laurie were determined to conceive again. But after many discouraging setbacks over several years, they questioned why they were still trying. "Then we realized we never wanted to regret not trying one more time," Laurie recalls. She says it helped knowing that Dr. Austin and his wife had also gone through fertility treatments. She remembers Dr. Austin calling her one night on his cell phone. "We talked for a good 45 minutes," she says. "It made all the difference in the world. The Women’s Care staff was really there for us." Robert, Laurie and Michael were overjoyed when the twins were conceived through in vitro fertilization.

Valerie and Dave from Eugene with six-month old Heather. After Dave had a successful vasectomy reversal, he and Valerie tried to conceive for six months without success. A laparoscopy showed that Valerie had severe endometriosis and required surgery. After the surgery, the couple turned to the Women’s Care Fertility Center for help. One unsuccessful in vitro fertilization was followed by two successful attempts. Unfortunately, both ended in miscarriages. Valerie got counseling to make sure she was grieving appropriately and wasn’t too stressed to continue with fertility treatment. "It took a lot for me to go on," she recalls. "But I wanted a baby badly enough to go through the emotional pain."

Valerie and Dave note that the Women’s Care staff addressed all their questions and concerns and were very responsive. Says Valerie, "Heather is so beautiful. I look at her and I’m so thankful the Women’s Care staff was there to help us achieve our goal. I love those guys!"
