Summer Health Checklist

It’s time for summer sun and fun. While enjoying those long, warm days, be sure to incorporate some healthy habits:

Use Sunscreen

About 80 percent of skin cancers could be prevented by protecting ourselves from the sun’s rays. Sun exposure is also the leading cause of premature skin aging. This happens to women of all colors, however the lighter the skin, the greater the risk. Remember to apply sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or greater whenever you go outside. (Look for moisturizers that include sunscreen.) Reapply sunscreen after swimming, perspiring heavily or drying skin with a towel. Also wear clothing that protects skin as much as possible, including a hat that shades face, neck and ears.

Drink Lots of Water

In the Willamette Valley, we’re often unaccustomed to the heat. When working or playing in the sun outdoors, remember to drink lots of water to avoid dehydration.

Walk for Fun and for Health

Anyone can start a walking program. In summer months when we have so many hours of daylight, it's easier to walk before work or after dinner. Walking briskly burns calories, helps keep legs strong, improves cardiovascular fitness, improves balance, and like other weight-bearing exercise, helps prevent osteoporosis.
