Post-Operative Instructions

Post-Operative Instructions

  1. If your surgery is at Sacred Heart, please plan to go to the hospital for Pre-admission Testing (P.A.T.) no later than the day before your procedure is scheduled. You will have a visit with the Anesthesia physician and you may have a blood test at P.A.T. You should allow 60-90 minutes for the P.A.T. visit. The P.A.T. office will validate your parking. For the McKenzie Surgery Center, this visit is done by phone or at the center immediately before your surgery.
  2. Please be on time for your admission to the hospital or surgery center at _________ a.m. on the day of your surgery. You should have a friend or relative bring you as you will not be allowed to drive yourself home after your discharge from the hospital. You may have a visitor stay with you until just before you are taken into the operating room for your procedure.
  3. We recommend that you fill any prescriptions by the day before surgery so that you may start the medications as soon as you need them.
  4. Be sure to make an appointment for a post-operative visit at the office for about two weeks after your procedure. This exam is to be sure that you are healing well after your surgery and to discuss any concerns you have at that time.
  5. We recommend that you wear comfortable and casual clothing to the hospital or surgery center.
  6. You may eat dinner any time up until 8:00 p.m. on the night before your operation. After dinner, you may have liquids but not solid food up until midnight. After midnight before your surgery, it is extremely important that you not eat or drink anything until after your procedure. This includes even coffee and water. If you eat or drink anything, your surgery will be cancelled for your own safety and will need to be rescheduled. If your surgery is scheduled for the afternoon (12:00 noon or later), you may have clear liquids up until 8:00 a.m. on the day of surgery. Clear liquids include water, 7-Up, clear apple juice, black coffee or tea (any liquid that you can see through) but does not include dairy products or other liquids.
  7. If you are having surgery at Sacred Heart, you may park in the parking structure (under the South building) and the short stay unit will validate your parking for the day.
  8. Please remember to bring your envelope with your admitting papers to the hospital or surgery center on the day of your procedure. This is very important!
