Physicians and Allied Staff

The physicians and staff at Women's Care are committed to excellence in bringing comprehensive health care for women in a partnership that honors patient individuality and dignity.

Susan Armstrong, CNM, MSN

Sue received her nurse-midwife training at Yale University and provided obstetrical care for almost 20 years before coming to the Fertility Center of Oregon. She now works with Dr. Austin in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility. She co-coordinates the Egg Donor IVF program and provides well-woman care.

When she is not working she enjoys traveling, the outdoors, reading and spending time with her husband and two children.


Douglas Austin, MD

Dr. Austin earned his medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He completed his residency in OB/GYN and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and fertility at Harvard University in 1997. Dr. Austin enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his wife, Teresa, and their son, Oliver.


Cristin Babcock, MD

Dr. Babcock grew up in Berkeley, California and did her medical training at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and Duke University. She and her husband, a high school biology teacher, have two children. Dr. Babcock enjoys riding horses, vegetable gardening, raising chickens, and participating in a book group. She specializes in both obstetrics and gynecology.


Keith Balderston, MD

Dr. Balderston completed his fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at University of California at Irvine, and his obstetrics and gynecology residency at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. He earned his medical degree at OHSU as well, and his Bachelor of Science degree in biology cum laude at the University of Oregon. A three-time PAC-10 All-Academic Basketball Team Member, Dr. Balderston still ranks high in all time stats at the U of O. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.


Shelly Bosworth, MS, CGC

Shelly Queneau Bosworth holds a Masters degree in Health and Medical Sciences from the University of California at Berkeley. She began working for the Center for Genetics and Maternal Fetal Medicine (then the Fetal Diagnostic Center) in 1997. Shelly is certified in genetic counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. For 4 years, she was an adjunct instructor of Biology at Lane Community College. Shelly especially enjoyed teaching the Human Genetics course she created. Shelly has helped educate other medical providers, the public and students through programs, lectures, and articles. She edited and assisted with grant work at the Pacific Northwest Genetics Group and the Genetics Education Materials Database.


Mary Carpenter, CNM, MS, FNP

Mary has practiced as a Certified Nurse Midwife in Eugene since 1982. She completed her Bachelors Degree at the University of New Mexico, her Midwifery training at the University of Illinois, and her Nurse Practitioner program at OHSU. She is a member of the Governor's Task Force on Maternity Care Access, the Executive Committee of the Oregon Chapter of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, and has an appointment as a Assistant Clinical Professor at OHSU.


Tiffany Diangson

Tiffany Diangson graduated from International Beauty School in Springfield and is a licensed aesthetician. Trained and certified by Syneron Laser Company, Tiffany believes the best cosmetic is healthy, radiant skin. She was raised in Eugene and enjoys experiencing the outdoors with her husband and two young children.


Melissa Edwards, MD

Dr. Edwards is a board certified gynecologist with a special interest in issues related to the treatment of pelvic support, including both surgical and non-surgical treatment of pelvic prolapse and disorders of the bladder. In addition, Dr. Edwards is trained in robotic-assisted surgery. She attended medical school and completed her residency in OB/GYN at Oregon Health and Sciences University. Dr. Edwards has practiced medicine in Eugene since 1997.

When not seeing patients, Dr. Edwards enjoys spending time with her husband, running, and supporting University of Oregon Duck athletics. She specializes in gynecology.



Matt Gilman, MT, TS (ABB)

Matthew is the Center's Embryologist. He earned a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science from Oregon Health and Science University in 2001. When not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Tamra, and their two dogs.


Frederick Green, MD

Dr. Green received his medical degree from the University of Colorado in 1980. He finished his internship and residency in family practice at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona where he also completed an additional residency in obstetrics and gynecology. His specialty interests include the removal of polyps.

As an undergraduate, Dr. Green attended Stanford University where he majored in economics/pre-med, and played for four years on the Cardinals basketball team. After graduation, he traveled to Australia to teach for three years prior to starting medical school. Originally hailing from Montana, he travels back frequently to fish and visit family and friends. Dr. Green specializes in both obstetrics and gynecology.


Milly Hallock, CMA

Milly is the Center's Egg Donor Program co-coordinator and staff supervisor of in-vitro fertilization. She earned her medical assisting certification at Lane Community College in 1994 and has been with the Fertility Center of Oregon since 1996.


Peter Hatfield, MD

Dr. Hatfield attended medical school at the University of Texas Southwest, and completed his OB/GYN residency at Baylor University in Dallas, Texas in 1979. He specializes in gynecology.


Matthew Haugen, MD

Dr. Haugen attended medical school at Oregon Health Sciences University where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed his OB/Gyn residency at The Ohio State University Hospital and Clinics before returning home to Eugene to practice medicine in 1995. Dr. Haugen and his wife Stacy have two children, Drew and Anna. In his free time he is an avid fisherman and fly tyer. He also enjoys outdoor cooking, gardening, and playing guitar. He specializes in both obstetrics and gynecology.


Sharon Huff, RN

Sharon earned an associate’s degree in nursing from Lane Community College in Eugene, OR, in 2002. She worked in labor and delivery at McKenzie Willamette Medical Center in Springfield, OR, until assuming the IVF coordinator position at The Fertility Center of Oregon in 2006. When not working, Sharon enjoys hiking, reading and spending time with her husband and three children and her new granddaughter.


Paula Jewett, MD

Dr. Jewett completed her residency and internship in obstetrics and gynecology at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, where she became a clinical instructor. She received her medical degree at Vanderbilt University where she was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She specializes in gynecology. Dr. Jewett recently completed training on the daVinci robotic surgical system, and along with Dr. Catherine York, performed the first ever robotic hysterectomies at Sacred Heart Medical Center RiverBend. Dr. Jewett is married with two daughters, Emily and Amanda. Away from work she enjoys running, cycling, cooking, reading and traveling.

Dr. Paula Jewett is also the medical director of The Aesthetics Center at Women's Care. With a personal interest in exercise physiology, strength training and the aging process of women, Dr. Jewett has designed her practice of aesthetics to complement the health care services she and her physician colleagues offer at Women's Care.


Vern L. Katz, MD

Dr. Katz completed his fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1986. He remained as faculty, serving as associate chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His research interests include the effects of maternal stress, occupation, and exercise on pregnancy and pregnancy outcome. Dr. Katz's clinical interests include the interaction of maternal diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, with pregnancy physiology. He is also interested in the effects of bacterial and viral maternal disease during pregnancy. Dr. Katz has published over 150 studies and articles in peer-reviewed journals, and authored chapters in more than 15 academic texts. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.


Brooke Kyle, MD

“I care about each and every patient! I strive to make visits uplifting and positive. I look forward to getting to know each patient as an individual. Welcome!”

Dr. Kyle received her medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she also completed her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Her areas of focus within obstetrics and gynecology include adolescent gynecology, endocrine disorders, minimally invasive surgery, sexual disorders, and postmenopausal care.

Dr. Kyle has a deep commitment to community service, and has provided medical care and comfort for AIDS patients, victims of Hurricane Katrina, and medically underserved women in Australia, Mexico and Zimbabwe. In her free time, Dr. Kyle enjoys hiking, numerous craft hobbies (among others, cooking, quilting, painting and printmaking) and spending time with her husband and their two children. She is fluent in Spanish. Dr. Kyle specializes in obstetrics and gynecology.


Gary LeClair, MD

Dr. LeClair received his medical degree from Baylor University in Houston, Texas and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor Affiliated Hospitals in 1975. He later also earned a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy and is a practicing licensed marriage and family therapist.

Dr. LeClair had been Chief of the Medical Staff at Sacred Heart hospital and has been involved in medical staff leadership for 17 years. He has served for two terms as a governor appointee to the Oregon Medical Board. In his free time, Dr. LeClair enjoys art, traveling and photography. He has three adult sons and four grandchildren. Dr. LeClair specializes in gynecology and family counseling.


Jeannie Merrick, RNNP, CMP

Jeannie earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of San Francisco in 1973. In 1979 she obtained her nurse practitioner certification from UCLA School of Medicine. Jeannie enjoys gardening, horseback riding and hiking, as well as spending time with her husband, Tony, and their son, Simon.


Kathryn L. Murray, MS, CGC

Kathryn graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a degree in Human Genetics. She has been instrumental in bringing comprehensive genetic counseling to Eugene. She has been active in the System Ethics Committee of Providence Health & PeaceHealth Systems. Kathryn was the onsite principal investigator in the BRCA1 Predisposition Testing Program at Harvard's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. At the University of Michigan, she aided in the verification of genetic markers for the Huntington disease gene. Locally, Kathryn served on the board of directors for both the Emerald Chapter of the March of Dimes and in her professional organization's Northwest branch. She is certified by the National Boards of Genetic Counseling and Medical Genetics.
