Illuminize Peel
Who can benefit from Illuminize Peel? Indications for Illuminize Peel include photo damaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentary abnormalities, superficial scarring and acne. Upper epidermal defects, such as, melasma can also be improved with Illuminize Peel.
What is the mechanism of skin rejuvenation from a Chemical Peel? Chemical peels produce a partial thickness injury to the skin, the depth of which is determined by the chemical agents. Following the trauma to the skin, the wound healing process reorients the new skin connective tissue. Collagen remodeling is the main reason chemical peels decrease sun damage and reduce wrinkles. Dermal regeneration can take weeks to months. The epidermis, however, heals in a few days giving the skin an improved appearance, more even skin color, smoother texture and a healthier glow.
How long will the effects of the chemical peel last? Aging of the skin is a chronic natural phenomenon. A single peel can reverse some of the clinical and histological signs of aging, but once the skin has healed from the peel, the aging process starts again. Therefore, a daily program of specifically designed products that reverse the sign of aging is necessary to maintain long-term improvement.
What can be expected after Illuminize Peel? Most patients leave the office looking healthy and fresh. Any redness or discoloration can easily be covered with makeup and most activities can be resumed right away. Within 48 hours a mild flaking will occur, which can be controlled with moisturizers.
How long will the procedure take? The procedure should take approximately 20 minutes.
Is it safe to have Illuminize Peel on a regular basis? Multiple treatments may be required to achieve desired results. Subsequent peels may be repeated every 3 to 4 weeks. There is no limit to the number of peels a person can receive as long as improvement continues. The effect is cumulative with time and enhanced with the SkinMedica daily regimen products.
What is the mechanism the peel uses to self-neutralize? Illuminize Peel is self-limiting and does not require a neutralization step like AHA peels, which need to be neutralized to terminate their action. Illuminize Peel is self-neutralized by the proteins in the skin.
How long should Illuminize Peel remain on the skin before washing? SkinMedica recommends washing the face in the evening. If the patient chooses to wash the face sooner, they should wait 1-2 hours until the yellow tinge completely disappears.
Can Illuminize Peel be performed on the neck and chest area? Illuminize Peel can be used on the neck and chest to improve fine wrinkling and blotchy discoloration (including age spots). One peel is usually not sufficient enough to give the patient their best results. Therefore, non-facial peels are usually repeated several times to achieve the best results. It is important to understand that non-facial areas generally do not heal as well as the face due to significantly less amount of pilosebaceous units (hair follicles and sebaceous gland). This means that non-facial areas take much longer to reepithelialize. Patients might see less peeling on non-facial area than on the face, but will still notice improvement in texture, smoothness and color of sun-damaged skin.
| Can a patient who is diagnosed with rosecea receive a Illuminize Peel? Illuminize Peel treatment for the patients diagnosed with rosecea should be left to physician discretion. It is safe to perform Illuminize Peel on a patient with non-inflamed rosecea, but a conservative approach is recommended due to potential sensitivity:

What makes Illuminize Peel helpful in management of acne? One of the active ingredients in Illuminize Peel is salicylic acid that has been used for several decades to treat acne. Salicylic acid is a comedolytic agent. This agent is lipid soluble and therefore it penetrates through the sebum of acne-prone skin better than water-soluble acids. Also, salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory properties since it is related to aspirin. In addition, Retinoic acid inhibits sebum production and reduces hyperkeratinization. It helps to unclog the pores and prevent the formation of new papules. Superficial exfoliation produced by Illuminize Peel also helps to improve post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by acne lesions.
How long after receiving Illuminize Peel can one be exposed to the sun? Sun avoidance during recovering period is critical. After the peeling is complete, one can resume regular activities, but daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 20 or higher) is imperative for maintaining healthy skin.
Can the weather condition affect the peeling process? With extreme temperature (either cold or hot) the skin dries much faster. It is VERY IMPORTANT to continuously moisturize the skin during the day to prevent premature peeling.
| Do you have to use a different technique on patients who are receiving Illuminize Peel for the first time? A more conservative approach applies to the first time procedure:
THE SAME APPROACH APPLIES WHEN ILLUMINIZE PEEL IS PERFORMED ON SKIN TYPES III – VI |
Is it safe to perform Illuminize Peel on a patient who is taking oral antibiotics? Some antibiotics increase skin sensitivity. Use conservative approach performing the procedure. If during the procedure the patient experiences moderate to intense burning or redness, STOP the procedure.
