Mammograms: Your Best Defense Against Breast Cancer
Regular mammograms save lives by detecting breast cancer early on, when treatment is more likely to be successful. A mammogram is an X-ray that captures detailed images of the breast tissue to identify early signs of breast cancer, often years before lumps or other symptoms become noticeable. According to the American College of Radiology, mammography has helped decrease breast cancer mortality rates by nearly 40% in the U.S.
Who Should Get a Mammogram?
he American Cancer Society recommends that women aged 40 and older should start scheduling an annual mammogram as long as they are in good health. Those 55 and older can choose to switch to mammograms every two years. Women with a higher risk of breast cancer may need to start screenings earlier and more frequently.

Preparing for Your Mammogram
To make your mammogram as comfortable and effective as possible, consider these tips:
- Schedule your mammogram for a time when your breasts are less likely to be tender, for many individuals who menstruate, this is typically one week after your period.
- Avoid deodorants, antiperspirants or lotions on your underarms or breasts on the day of your exam, as these can interfere with the X-ray images.
- Wear a two-piece outfit so you can easily undress from the waist up.
What to Expect During Your Mammogram
During the procedure, a technologist will position your breast on the mammography unit. Your breast will be compressed between two plates to spread the tissue and obtain clear images. While the compression may be uncomfortable, it only lasts a few seconds. Please inform your technician if the discomfort becomes too much.
After Your Mammogram
After the mammogram, the images will be reviewed by a radiologist, and the results will be shared with you and your provider. If any abnormalities are found, further diagnostic tests may be recommended.
Stay Ahead with Regular Screenings
By catching breast cancer in its initial stages, mammograms can significantly reduce the need for aggressive treatments and increase the likelihood of a full recovery.
