What are birth defects?

Birth defects are abnormalities in a baby that may produce intellectual or physical problems after the baby is born. These problems can be mild, moderate, or severe. Babies with birth defects may have minimal problems, or they may be intellectually delayed, physically handicapped, or otherwise disabled. The purpose of screening is to provide the parents with information to prepare for the potential issues.
