What to Expect at Your 6-Week Postpartum Visit
You’ve made it through the first weeks of new motherhood and your postpartum appointments are an important part of recovery. We recommend starting with a 3-week check-in visit before your full 6-week postpartum checkup. The postpartum visit is all about you. Here’s a quick look at what to expect.
What Your Provider Might Check During an In-Office Postpartum Visit
- Pelvic exam – Your provider may decide to do a pelvic exam to confirm your uterus has returned to its normal size and that any tearing, episiotomy or cesarean incision is healing well. A Pap smear may also be performed.
- Blood pressure & general health – Especially important if you experienced complications like preeclampsia or gestational diabetes during pregnancy.
- Breast health – Whether you’re breastfeeding or not, your provider will check in on how things are going. For questions before your visit, explore our Breastfeeding FAQ or call us at (541) 868-9700.
What You’ll Discuss In Person or Via Your Telemed Appointment
- Contraception – Returning fertility after birth can be unpredictable, making it important to discuss contraception options. Your provider will help you find the right option for your body and lifestyle.
- Returning to activity – Your provider will give you personalized guidance on returning to activity based on your delivery and recovery. Learn more about what to expect when returning to daily activity on our website.
- Sexual health – Hormonal changes after birth can cause vaginal dryness or discomfort. Your provider will discuss when it’s safe to resume intimacy and how to make it comfortable.
- Your mental health – Postpartum blues are common. Your provider will screen for postpartum depression and anxiety, ask how you’ve been feeling emotionally and check in on your sleep and overall coping.
Come Prepared
Bring a list of any questions or concerns, nothing is too small. You may also want to note any changes in your cycle, bladder/bowel movement, overall fatigue or mood since delivery.
Don’t Wait to Schedule
If you have complications during your pregnancy or hypertension, your provider will want you to come into the office during week 1 of postpartum to check your blood pressure. Please make your 6-week appointment as soon as you’re discharged from the hospital. We also recommend a 3-week check-in visit, available both in-person and via telehealth. Find your nearest location or call (541) 868-9700 to book today.
